Stand straight. Fake it till you make it. Say nice things to yourself in the mirror.
Most confidence advice sounds good and changes nothing.

If you're searching how to be confident, you've probably tried some of it already. Maybe it worked for a day. Then you walked into a room, saw a girl you liked, or had to speak in a meeting, and the same old fear was sitting right there in your chest.

See, confidence is not something you put on. It's something you build, and it gets built in a very specific way. Let me show you how.

How to be confident: the honest answer

You become confident by doing the things you're scared of, again and again, until your mind has proof that you can handle them. Confidence doesn't come first and then action. Action comes first. Keep small promises to yourself, take one small risk every day, and stop waiting to feel ready, because that feeling only shows up after you move.

That's it. Everything below is just how to do this in real life, at work, and especially with women.

What confidence really is, and what it isn't

Most Indian men picture a confident guy as loud. The one who talks the most at the party, cracks jokes, and has an opinion on everything.

That's often the opposite. A lot of loud men are covering up fear with noise.

Real confidence is quieter. It simply means you are okay with the outcome. You can ask for what you want, hear a no, and still be fine. You can disagree with your boss without your voice shaking. You can walk up to a girl, say hello, and if she's not interested, you smile and go back to your coffee.

It's also not the same as being arrogant, or not caring about anyone. You can be kind, soft-spoken and respectful, and still be the most confident man in the room.

In my words

Being a typical nice guy is not the problem. The problem is they have no spine, no courage, no decisiveness to go for who they want.

So I'm not going to tell you to stop being a nice guy. I'm going to tell you to grow a spine next to it.

Why you feel low confidence (and how to fix it)

Guys who come to me usually have a theory about why they lack confidence. It's their face. Their height. Their English. Their salary. Their skin.

And I keep seeing the same thing: when that one thing gets fixed, the fear stays. The skin clears up, the salary goes up, and he still can't talk to the girl in his office. Because it was never about the face. It's about how he feels about himself, and that feeling was built by years of avoiding things.

The biggest problem is fear of rejection. Every time you avoid something because you might look stupid, your mind learns one lesson: "this is dangerous, we can't handle it". Do that for ten years and you have a grown man who is scared of saying hi.

Here's something that helps. In 2000, Gilovich, Medvec and Savitsky made students walk into a room wearing an embarrassing T-shirt. The students guessed about half the room would notice. Only about a quarter actually did. Psychologists call it the spotlight effect: we think everyone is watching us and judging every mistake, and they're mostly busy thinking about themselves.

So that awkward thing you said last week, that you replay at night? Nobody remembers it. Literally nobody.

In my words

You are not broken. Your understanding is.

8 habits that build real confidence

None of these will change you in a day. Do them for three months and you won't recognise yourself.

Habit 1

Keep small promises to yourself

Confidence is trust in yourself. And trust gets built the same way with you as with anyone else: by keeping your word. If you say you'll wake up at 6, wake up at 6. If you say you'll go to the gym, go, even for 20 minutes. Every broken promise to yourself tells your mind "this guy doesn't follow through". Start with promises so small you can't fail them, then grow them.

Habit 2

Do one uncomfortable thing every day

Ask a question in the meeting. Call the restaurant instead of messaging. Say hi to the neighbour you always avoid in the lift. Ask a stranger for directions even though Google Maps exists. Tiny things. The point is to show your mind, every single day, that discomfort doesn't kill you.

Habit 3

Get volume, not perfection

If you only talk to the one girl you really like, every conversation feels like life or death, and that pressure makes you nervous and needy. Talk to everyone. The auto driver, the girl at the counter, the new guy at work. Volume kills fear. When you've had a hundred normal conversations, one more stops being scary.

Habit 4

Take care of your body

Gym, sleep, a decent haircut, clothes that fit. Not to become someone else, and not to hide behind muscles, but because a man who respects his body carries himself differently. You'll notice it in how you stand after even a month of regular workouts.

Habit 5

Get really good at something

Competence feeds confidence. Your work, a sport, cooking, guitar, anything. When you know you're good at one thing, it spills into everything else, because you've proven to yourself that you can learn.

Habit 6

Stop asking for approval

Notice how often you say sorry when nothing is your fault, explain yourself too much, or agree just to avoid a fight. Start saying no to small things you don't want to do. People respect a man who knows his own mind, even when they don't agree with him.

Habit 7

Slow down

Nervous men rush. They speak fast, laugh at their own jokes before the punchline, and look away first. Speak a little slower than feels natural. Pause before answering. Hold eye contact a second longer. Your body tells your mind how to feel as much as your mind tells your body.

Habit 8

Learn the skill you're scared of

A lot of low confidence is just lack of knowledge. If you freeze around women, it's often because nobody ever taught you what to say or how attraction works. Love is a skill, and skills can be learned. The same is true for public speaking, negotiating, anything. Learn it, practise it, and the fear shrinks on its own.

How to be confident with girls

This is where most men feel it the most. You can run a team at work and still go blank when she says hi.

First, understand why. Around a girl you like, you're not just talking. You're trying to get a yes. And the more you want that yes, the more careful you get, and careful is boring.

In my words

They are always worried about being rejected, and because of it they are always too simple, and their questions are too interview-style.

Here's what actually helps:

In my words

If you wait long, you will not be asking a normal girl out on a date. You will be asking a crush out on a date. And the moment you label somebody your crush in your mind, you're not the same person anymore. You lose all your confidence and all your charm.

And here's some good news from research. Boothby and colleagues found in 2018 that after a conversation, people consistently underestimate how much the other person liked them. They called it the liking gap. So after you talk to her and walk away thinking "that went badly", it probably went better than you think.

If you want the exact words for starting a conversation, I've written a full guide in Hinglish: ladki se baat kaise kare. And for going from talking to actually winning her over without games, read ladki kaise pataye.

How to look confident: body language that actually matters

Body language won't fix a scared mind, but it does help, and people notice it before you say a word.

Do these while you build the habits above, and the outside and the inside slowly start to match.

Confidence vs arrogance: don't mix them up

Some men hear "be confident" and turn into show-offs. Talking about their bike, their salary, putting others down to look bigger.

That's insecurity wearing a costume. A confident man doesn't need to prove anything, so he can listen, laugh at himself, and make others feel comfortable.

And it matters with women too. A study by Urbaniak and Kilmann in 2003 found that for serious relationships, women chose the kind man over the better-looking one. Kindness plus a spine is what wins. Not arrogance, and not a doormat either.

How long does it take to become confident?

You'll feel a difference in a few weeks if you actually do the daily uncomfortable thing. The deeper change, where you just feel okay in your own skin without thinking about it, usually takes months. For some men, a year.

That's fine. Take micro steps. Don't look for a magic pill, and don't judge your progress by one bad day.

I personally feel the best sign that it's working is simple: you start doing things before you feel ready. That's the moment you've crossed over.

Common questions about confidence

How can I be confident?

Do the things you're scared of, in small doses, every day, until your mind has proof you can handle them. Keep small promises to yourself and stop waiting to feel ready. The feeling of confidence shows up after action, not before.

How do I fix low confidence?

Stop blaming one thing like your face, height or salary, because the fear usually stays even when that changes. Start keeping small promises to yourself, do one uncomfortable thing daily, and learn the skill you're scared of. Low confidence is mostly years of avoiding things.

What are 5 quick ways to boost confidence?

Keep one small promise to yourself today, do one thing that scares you a little, fix your posture and slow down your speech, work out, and talk to one stranger. None of these change you in a day, but done daily they add up fast.

How do I become confident with girls?

Treat her like a normal person instead of a prize, talk to many people so no single conversation feels like life or death, and ask her out early before she turns into a crush in your head. Rejection is information, not a verdict on you.

Can an introvert be confident?

Yes. Confidence is not being loud. It simply means being okay with the outcome. A quiet man who can ask for what he wants, hold eye contact and hear a no calmly is more confident than a loud man covering up fear with noise.

Is confidence born or built?

Built. Some people get a head start from their family or school, but everyone builds confidence the same way: by taking risks and surviving them. It is a skill, and skills can be learned.

How long does it take to become confident?

You'll feel a change within a few weeks of doing something uncomfortable every day. The deeper change, where you feel okay in your own skin without thinking, usually takes a few months, sometimes a year. Take micro steps and don't judge yourself by one bad day.

Confidence is not a feeling you wait for.
It's proof you build.
