You love her. She likes you.
Those are not the same thing.
You know her favourite song. You know which day her exam is. You have read her last message so many times you could say it without looking.
She knows you are a nice guy. That's about it.
If that's you, read this slowly. I'm not going to tell you to "just move on". Everyone has already told you that, and it hasn't worked.
I'm going to show you why one sided love holds on so tight, how to know for sure, and exactly how to let it go.
What is one sided love?
One sided love is when you have real romantic feelings for someone who doesn't feel the same way about you. Sometimes she knows and has said no. Sometimes she has no idea. Either way, the feelings are real. They are just moving in one direction.
Psychologists call it unrequited love. It's one of the most common heartbreaks there is, and one of the least talked about. Nothing "happened". There was no relationship to end. So you don't feel allowed to be this hurt.
You are allowed.
Why one sided love hurts so much
You're not only missing her. You're missing a whole future you built in your head. The one where she finally chooses you.
Three things keep that future alive.
1. A maybe hurts more than a no
A clear no hurts once. A maybe hurts every single day.
One warm reply after three dry ones. A long hug at a farewell. A "you're so sweet". Each one feels like a sign, so you keep waiting for the next one.
In 1993, psychologists Roy Baumeister, Sara Wotman and Arlene Stillwell collected real stories from both sides of one sided love. The people in love believed they had been led on, and that the rejection had never been made clear. The people who didn't feel the same mostly felt guilty, and had no idea how to say no.[1]
So she softens it. You read the softness as hope.
She is usually not being cruel. She is trying to be kind. But kindness without clarity keeps you stuck.
2. Your brain treats her like a craving
In 2010, a team led by anthropologist Helen Fisher scanned the brains of people who had recently been rejected by someone they were still intensely in love with. Looking at a photo of that person lit up the same areas linked to craving and addiction.[2]
That's why checking her profile doesn't feel like a choice. It feels like a need.
And you don't beat a craving by thinking about it more. You beat it by cutting the supply.
3. You were trained to wait
Most Indian men grow up with the same instructions. Study first. Don't disturb anyone. Be the good boy.
So we love quietly and hope she notices. We call it respect. Most of the time, it's fear.
You become her best friend. Her listener. The guy she calls when something goes wrong. You accept it with a smile, and you carry the pain home.
7 signs your love is one sided
Count who asks the questions. That's the whole story.
Look at what she does, not what you hope it means.
- You start every conversation. If you stop texting, the chat just stops.
- She replies, but never asks you anything back.
- She tells you about the guys she likes.
- Plans only happen when you make them, and she cancels easily.
- She calls you her best friend, or says you're "like a brother".
- You know everything about her day. She knows very little about yours.
- You feel anxious after talking to her, not calm.
If three or more of these are true, you already know. The real question is what you do next.
Should you tell her you love her?
Yes. Once. Clearly. Then let her answer be the answer.
Staying quiet feels safe. It isn't. It keeps you in the maybe forever.
And you might be wrong about her, in either direction. Psychologists have found that after a conversation, people keep underestimating how much the other person liked them. They call it the liking gap.[3] Your fear is not a reliable judge of what she feels.
The only way to know where you stand is to ask.
How to say it
- In person or on a call. Not a long WhatsApp paragraph at 2 am.
- Keep it short: "I like you. More than as a friend. I just wanted to be honest with you, and whatever you feel is okay with me."
- Then stop talking. No speech. No "just give me one chance".
If she says no, her no is a full answer. You don't negotiate it. You don't wait it out. You don't try to change her mind.
Chasing a no is not love. Respecting it is.
How to get over one sided love: 5 steps
Time doesn't heal you. Your efforts do.
Here's what those efforts actually look like.
Close it yourself
You don't need her permission to end this. If you've told her, you have your answer. If you've decided not to tell her, make that decision final: "I'm not waiting for her anymore."
Closure isn't something she gives you. It's something you decide.
Cut the supply
Mute her stories. Archive the chat. Stop checking when she was last online.
Not to punish her. To stop feeding the craving.
If you're close friends, take a real break for 30 days. You can tell her simply: "I need a little space for a while. It's nothing you did."
Separate what happened from what you hoped
Take a page. Draw two columns.
On the left, write what she actually did and said. On the right, write what you hoped it meant.
Most one sided love lives in the right column. Seeing it on paper takes away a lot of its power.
Put the energy back into your own life
Gym. Work. The friends you've been ignoring. The skill you keep postponing.
Do it for you, not as a show for her. A man who is building his own life stops waiting to be chosen.
Learn how attraction is built
This is the part nobody tells you.
The cure for one sided love isn't forgetting her. It's becoming a man who makes his interest clear early, and knows how to make a conversation feel like something to her.
Until you learn that, it's the same ending with a different girl. Every time.

How long does one sided love last?
As long as you keep feeding it.
One sided love can run for years on a few replies a month. That's the cruel part. It doesn't need much to survive.
The good news is that the pain is usually smaller than you fear. In one study, people in relationships predicted how upset they would be if they broke up. The ones who actually went through a breakup were less upset than they had predicted.[4] We are bad at predicting heartbreak. We almost always expect it to be worse.
So cut the supply, and give it a few weeks before you judge how you feel.
Is one sided love true love?
It feels like the purest love there is. You ask for nothing back. You just care.
But love that only moves one way can't hold you, can't know you, and can't choose you back.
One sided love isn't love yet. It's longing.
Real love is two people choosing each other. You deserve that.
The Bhagavad Gita has a line that helps here: "You have a right to your actions, but never to their fruits." (Chapter 2, verse 47)
Your part is to feel it honestly and say it once. Her answer is not your part. The suffering starts when you hold on to the fruit.
I teach Indian men how to love and be loved. One sided love is all of the first half and none of the second. It's time to learn the second half.
Common questions about one sided love
What is one sided love?
One sided love means loving someone who doesn't love you back in the same way. She may know and have said no, or she may not know at all. Psychologists call it unrequited love.
How do I know if my love is one sided?
Watch what she does, not what you hope. If you always start the conversation, she rarely asks about your life, she talks to you about other men, and plans only happen when you push, it's one sided.
Can one sided love become two sided?
Sometimes, if she never knew how you felt. That's why telling her once, clearly, is worth it. If she has already said no, take that as the answer. Chasing a no rarely turns it into a yes, and it costs you your self-respect.
How long does one sided love last?
As long as you keep feeding it with hope, checking and waiting. Once you cut the supply and put the energy into your own life, it starts to loosen. Give it a few weeks before you judge how you feel.
Is one sided love true love?
The feelings are real, but it isn't a relationship. Love that only moves one way is longing. Real love is two people choosing each other.
Should I stay friends with her?
Only if you can do it without secretly waiting. If being around her keeps the hope alive, take real distance first. You can come back as a friend later, when it no longer hurts.
Stop waiting to be chosen.
Start choosing.
