You talk every day. You've met, maybe many times.
But if a friend asks "what are you two?", you have no answer.
That feeling has a name now. If you searched situationship meaning after hearing the Jassa Dhillon song, or after a friend used the word on you, here is the plain version first, and then the part the dictionaries skip: what to do if you are the one stuck inside it.
Because most men I see in a situationship are not there by choice. They are there because they never asked.
Situationship meaning, in one minute
A situationship is a romantic connection with no label and no clear direction. You act a bit like a couple, you talk daily, go out, maybe get close, but nobody has said what this is or where it is going. It sits between friendship and a relationship, and it usually stays stuck there. The word itself is just "situation" plus "relationship".
In Hindi, people explain it as "na dosti, na relationship". Something in between, with no name, and no promise.
A few years ago nobody used this word. The situation was always there, though. Our parents' generation just called it "time pass", and the person who got hurt at the end was usually the one who had quietly hoped for more.
What does it mean to be in a situationship?
See, a situationship rarely starts as one. It starts as something with a lot of promise, and then it slowly stops moving.
Here is how it usually looks for Indian men:
- The colleague you take every chai break with. You text her at night, you know about her manager problems, and you have never once been out with her after office.
- The girl from college you went to movies with twice. People joke that you two are together. Neither of you denies it, and neither of you confirms it.
- The dating app match you've met four times. It goes well every time. Then she's busy for a week, and you have no idea if you're allowed to ask why.
- The girl who calls you at 1 am when she's bored or low, and goes quiet the moment her weekend is full.
In every one of these, there is closeness. What's missing is a decision.
And I personally feel this is where most men make their biggest mistake. They think "let it flow" is being chill. It simply means they are scared of hearing the answer, so they never ask the question.
In my wordsMen stay stuck because they are scared. Fear is the one that stops them from admitting their feelings, and even sharing those feelings.
Is a situationship like dating? Talking stage vs situationship
People mix up three different things, so let me separate them.
The talking stage is the beginning. You've just met, you're chatting, maybe you've been on one date. It's normal for this to have no label. It's young. The question is whether it moves.
Dating means you are going out with intent. Both of you know it's romantic, you're meeting regularly, and you're both open about wanting to see where it goes, even if you haven't said "boyfriend" and "girlfriend" yet.
A situationship is when it has been weeks or months, it looks like dating from outside, and still nothing has been said. It's a talking stage that got comfortable and forgot to grow up.
So the difference is not the label. It's movement. A talking stage is going somewhere. A situationship is parked.
How do I know if I'm in a situationship? 8 signs
Be honest with yourself while you read these. Not what you hope, what is actually happening.
- You don't know what to call her when someone asks. "She's a friend" feels wrong, and "girlfriend" feels like a lie.
- Plans are last minute. You meet when it suits the moment, rarely something planned a week ahead.
- You haven't met each other's friends, or you have, but as "just a friend".
- You avoid the "what are we" talk because you're scared it will end things.
- She talks about other guys, or you know she's still on dating apps, and you feel you have no right to mind.
- The closeness comes and goes. One week it feels like a relationship, the next week she's distant, and nobody explains anything.
- Nobody talks about the future. Not marriage, just next month. A trip, a wedding you might take her to, anything.
- You feel more confused than happy. You spend more time decoding her messages than enjoying her company.
If four or more of these are true, you already know the answer. You don't need one more week of "seeing how it goes".
Why a situationship hurts so much
A breakup at least has an ending. A situationship doesn't even give you that.
You can't be fully happy, because it's not really yours. And you can't be sad either, because "technically nothing happened". So you swallow it, and you smile when she tells you about her weekend.
The biggest problem is what it does to your self-respect over time. You start adjusting yourself to keep her around. You don't ask for what you want, because asking might end it. You wait for her mood before you decide your mood.
In my wordsIn the wish to be validated by the girl, they stop validating themselves, and that is the biggest problem.
And to be fair to her, she is usually confused too. A lot of women stay in situationships because the man never made his intentions clear. She doesn't know if you're serious, so she keeps her options open. You read that as her not being interested. Both of you are waiting for the other to go first.
Someone has to go first. It might as well be you.
Is a situationship good or bad?
If two people honestly want something casual, have said so out loud, and are both fine with it, then it's their business. No one is being fooled.
But that's rarely the case with the men who come to me. Usually one person is comfortable and the other person is hoping. And if you are the one hoping, it's bad for you. Every month you spend in it is a month you are not meeting someone who would happily call you hers.
There's an old study, Gilovich and Medvec, 1995, that found people regret the chances they did not take far more than the ones they took, especially over the long run. Nobody looks back at 35 and wishes they had waited longer to ask a simple question.
Red flags in a situationship
- She only reaches out late at night, or only when she needs something.
- You ask to meet properly and it's always "let's see".
- She gets upset if you talk to other girls, but won't commit herself. That's having it both ways.
- You've tried to bring up where this is going, and it got changed into a joke every time.
None of this makes her a bad person. It just tells you where you stand.
Stop being the guy she "sort of" talks to
Most situationships start in the chat, when a man keeps texting for weeks and never moves it to a call or a real date. My ₹89 workshop teaches you how to build attraction in conversation and ask her out clearly, so it never gets stuck in the first place.

How to turn a situationship into a relationship
You have one tool here, and it's not a trick. It's clarity.
If you haven't really been on dates yet, and it's mostly chatting and hanging out in groups, then start there. Ask her out properly, one on one, as a date.
In my wordsWhen you like somebody, you let them know immediately, but not in a way that scares them. The best way to let them know is by asking them to meet, or to go on a date with you. From there, the pathway to friendship stops and the pathway to romance starts.
If you have been going out for a while, then it's time for the conversation. Do it in person or on a call, never a paragraph on WhatsApp at 2 am. Keep it short and calm. Something like:
"I really like spending time with you, and I'm not looking for something casual. I'd like us to see where this goes, properly. What do you want?"
Then stop talking and listen. Don't fill the silence with "no pressure, it's totally fine if not". You just said something honest. Let it stand.
If she says yes, great. You're dating now, with a direction. If you want the Hinglish version of how to ask a girl to be your girlfriend, I've written it here: girlfriend kaise banaye.
If she says "I don't know" or "I'm not ready", that is also an answer. Always remember, a woman who wants you makes it clear. You don't have to squeeze a yes out of anyone.
And one more thing. If most of your "relationship" is happening in chat, fix that first. Chatting is just a filler, it's not where two people really get to know each other. I've explained how to move from chat to a call and a date in ladki se chat kaise kare.
How to end a situationship, and when to walk away
If you've asked clearly and the answer is vague, or you've already asked twice, it's time to leave. Not to punish her. To respect yourself.
In my wordsIt is very important to recognise when to walk away, when to cut your losses, instead of obsessing about the same girl.
Say it once, kindly, and don't make a speech:
"I've really enjoyed this, but I want something real, and I don't think we want the same thing. So I'm going to step back. I wish you well."
Then actually step back. Mute or unfollow her, stop replying to the 1 am messages, and don't stay "just friends" while secretly waiting for her to change her mind. That's the same situationship with a new name.
It will sting for a while, even though "nothing happened". If it felt real to you, it's okay that it hurts. If you were stuck loving her from a distance for a long time, read my piece on one sided love. If it was a proper relationship that ended, this will help more: how to move on after a breakup.
How to avoid getting into another situationship
Most situationships are not bad luck. They are the result of a man who never said what he wanted.
So say it early. Not a big confession on day one, just clear intent. You ask her out as a date, not as "hang out sometime". You move from chat to a call to meeting. And after a few dates, if it's going well, you don't wait six months to talk about what this is.
I personally feel the fear of losing her by asking is much smaller than the pain of losing a year by not asking. And the women worth your time will respect you more for being clear, not less.
Clarity scares away the wrong girl.
It attracts the right one.
Common questions about situationships
What exactly is a situationship?
A situationship is a romantic connection with no label and no direction. You talk and meet like a couple, but nobody has said what it is or where it is going. In Hindi people call it "na dosti, na relationship".
How do I know if I'm in a situationship?
You don't know what to call her, plans are always last minute, you avoid the "what are we" talk, nobody mentions the future, and you feel more confused than happy. If several of these are true for weeks or months, you are in one.
Is a situationship good or bad?
It's fine only if both people honestly want something casual and have said so. Usually one person is comfortable and the other is hoping. If you are the one hoping, it costs you time you could spend with someone who would happily commit.
What is the difference between the talking stage and a situationship?
The talking stage is the beginning, when it's normal not to have a label and things are still moving. A situationship is when weeks or months have passed, it looks like dating, and still nothing has been said. The difference is movement.
Can a situationship turn into a relationship?
Yes, but only if someone asks. Ask her out properly if you haven't been on real dates, and if you have, tell her calmly in person that you want something real and ask what she wants. A vague answer is also an answer.
What is the 3-3-3 rule for dating?
It's a rule of thumb from social media: after three dates, check if there is real attraction; after three weeks, check if the effort is consistent; after three months, decide if it's going somewhere serious. It's useful because it stops you from drifting into a situationship.
How do I end a situationship?
Say it once, kindly and clearly, that you want something real and don't think you want the same thing. Then actually step back: mute or unfollow her and don't stay "just friends" while hoping. That is the same situationship with a new name.
